Taekwondo Origins
Did Taekwondo derive from a combination of early Korean martial arts or did it derive from Karate during the Japanese occupation of Korea? Or was it a mixture of both or some other root of development?

ITF TeaKwon-Do is the original TeaKwon-Do ITF stands for International TeaKwon-Do Federation. In 1944 TeaKwon was formed by General Choi Hong Hi using elements of the ancient Korean martial art of Taek Kyon and of Shotokan karate, a martial art he had learned while studying in Japan. and now the part from the websitehttp://www.tkd-itf.org/pub_web/ver_eng/index.html On April 11th, 1955, the name Taekwon-Do was officially adopted for the martial art General Choi Hong Hi had developed using elements of the ancient Korean martial art of Taek Kyon and of Shotokan karate, a martial art he had learned while studying in Japan. The philosophical values and the goals of Taekwon-Do are firmly rooted in the traditional moral culture of the Orient. On the technical side, defensive and offensive tactics are based on principles of physics, particularly Newton's Law, which explains how to generate maximum force by increasing speed and mass during the execution of a movement. Wanting to share the results of his philosophical reflections and his technical experiments, General Choi planned and wrote a unique reference work, the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do. In its fifteen volumes, he explained in detail the rules and practices of this art. Always striving for excellence, General Choi presented Taekwon-Do as in a state of continuous evolution, open to changes that would improve its effectiveness. He wrote that anyone who believes he has fully discharged his duty will soon perish. Likewise, any undertaking that is perceived to have reached its objectives is likely to lose momentum, stagnate, and die. Since the beginning, Taekwon-Do has never stopped evolving, driven by the strong will and a lot of hard work by its Founder. The leaders of the ITF today also recognize the need to evolve and they are equally passionate about the future of the organization. hope you all enjoyed reading this

Thanks Idan yes that was helpful, I had heard of General Choi but that was about it. Interesting to see there was an original martial art called Taek Kyon I never knew that. What is Hwarang-do is that connected to Taekwondo? I've never really looked into Taekwondo's history I will have to check it out. I know there is different Taekwondo organisations, but is there different Taekwondo styles, such as traditional styles, sport styles etc?

Idan- 10-20-2008

what is Hwarang -do? :S :P xD lol. there are two main styles of Tkd the original one that is ITF that is what i train in and WTF World TeaKwan-Do Federation wich was developed for competing in the Olympics (ITF there are things in ITF that arn't legal in the Olympics. and there alot more i think

Don't know lol I just remember asking someone who had joined our karate club if he had ever done any other martial arts training and he said yeah he had done Hwarang-do, think that's how you spell it and he said it was a type of Taekwondo? I will have to Google it. Ah I see, I to would probably be more inclined to study the traditional ITF but that's just me, im guessing the traditional style is more self defence based then rather than based on scoring points.

Idan- 10-21-2008

yes it is more self defense but the differences arn't that big but umm lets say in judo (did i spell that ok?) when you compete your goal is to get the opponent to the ground in TKD the goal is to get points by hitting in different places gives you different amounts of points so you need to get as many points as you can BTW that long part out of Wiki is just a small part xD
