Lately I have been watching a lot of Akira Kurosawa's movies and have become a big fan, his samurai movies are great and truly represent the samurai era a lot better than any other director I know of, do a Google search to see his filmography, his most famous movie in the west is probably Seven Samurai although I think his others are even better. Check them out for yourselves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_Kurosawa

Arahan is the best.

Sakura- 09-29-2008

Arahan is the best  You got to be joking right? Akira Kurosawa is one of Japans best ever directors, if not one of the worlds best. Look at the inspiration he has had on so many later Western movies and legendary directors such as George Lucas. His black & white movies may seem a little dated to a younger audience but they really are classics and are seen as some as works of art. Watch Kagemusha one of his later samurai movies (in colour) as an introduction then watch his older stuff starring legendary Toshiro Mifune (the ultimate samurai actor) such as Sanjuro, Throne Of Blood, Hidden Fortress etc. They along with a select few of other samurai films such as Seppuku, Twilight Samurai etc etc are real classics that get better evey time you watch them.

The thing is comparing e.g. Kagemusha with Arahan is like comparing chalk and cheese they are two completely different kind of movies. Ultimately it comes down to personal prefference, but I have to agree with Sakura as I am a huge Kurosawa fan. I havn't watched all of Arahan but I must admit from the clips I watched I actually quite enjoyed it and am interested to watch the full movie, Arahan is an over the top matrix style light hearted movie that is nothing like any of Kurosawa movies so you can't really compare them they are just way too different. Lets all try to compile a list of 'our' top 5 martial arts films of all time... I'll have a re-think then post mine.

There's no "you've got to be kidding". That's what MY opinion is Mr. All opinions can never be the same.

Sakura- 09-30-2008

Sorry BB I think we have crossed wires slightly, I was replying to your statement Arahan is the best, believing that your 'statement' was a response to Budo's previous Kurosawa post in which case I disagreed with your statement; that Arahan depicts the samurai era better than Kurosawa films etc, although I guess you could of also been just replying to the main post question, 'What do you reckon is the best martial arts film ever.' Anyway all points of view are welcome and valued on a forum and it’s the variety of views that make for interesting debate on forums, no offence meant :) Anyway my top 5... 1) Kagemusha 2) Throne of blood 3) Hidden fortress 4) Enter the dragon 5) Seppuku

Yep, i was replying to the main post. No probs. My attitude has just become like that moderating so many forums.
